So far, so good. The Racers got off to 2 quick starts over the weekend, on their way to 2 exhibition wins over Brock University 79-39 and over A-game hoops 78-60.
For Racer fans, there are a few things that pop out as very encouraging about the trip so far. First, head coach Steve Prohm has used the same phrase to describe both games: that the Racers played with “good energy,” something one could easily accuse Murray of lacking in stretches last season.
The second thing is their shooting. Now, it has to be noted that the Racers aren’t playing top notch defenses, but Murray is hitting 47% from the field in their two contests. The Racers have also dominated the boards to the tune of 85-47 in the two games.
This is also giving us our first look at the new Racers. On the stat sheet, junior transfer Latreze Mushatt has shined, putting up 21 points and 11 rebounds across the two contests. (You have to consider that minutes have been stretched out across all 13 players in these exhibition contests) Mushatt sat out last season after transferring from UMKC. (Missouri-Kansas City). Reports I’ve heard say freshman Zay Jackson is also impressing: He put up 8 points, and 3 rebounds in the win over A-game Hoops.
As far as veteran leadership is concerned, Ivan Aska and Ed Daniel have put up solid numbers as well, which isn’t surprising. Isiah Cannan has been a bit more inconsistent so far, but it’s only 2 games so that could be an anomaly.
The Racers still have one more game on the Canadian tour, tonight at 6 p.m. central time against the ABA Canada All-Stars.
