The first full week of college basketball is in the books, and most of the OVC is taking it on the chin from Division I teams.
Most, but not all.
Eastern Kentucky bucks the trend, and pulls in the conferences first win against Division I teams on Saturday, with a 12 point road win against Winthorp.
Mike DiNunno is proving to be a real offensive threat for the Colonels, leading the team in both scoring and assists through 2 contests. But it’s their ball control that would have me really excited. Only 18 turnovers total in 2 games. Some teams have had more than that in a single game.
The supposed benefit to running a small lineup is that they can create problems for teams with their quickness, but Morehead St. looked anything but quick against N.C. State. Wolfpack shot 61% against the Eagles, thanks to open looks in the lane. But Morehead hit 8 of 15 from 3-point range. Looks like high scoring games ahead for the Eagles.
Lost in the score is that UT Martin really played much worse than it shows for the first 30 minutes of the game. But 2nd half 13-0 run reminds me why I like this team. They’re athletic, but still very young. Turnover bug continues: Troy King with 13 in 1st 2 games, Mike Liabo with 8.
So, 53 points in the 1st half against Miles College, but only 37 points in 40 minutes against Marshall? Another OVC team showing their youth. Ball control was better, but still not great. (15 turnovers) Probably lucky loss wasn’t worse: Marshall only hit 4-20 from three point range.
