Oh SEMO, what are we going to do with you.

After a tough loss to Missouri, and an encouraging win against Harris-Stowe, you drop a close contest on the road against Bradley…a Bradley team picked to finish last in the MVC. You missed a chance for a solid win in a game you probably should have won.

And Tennessee State, your offense has returned! Sort of. It was against Fisk. And you still shot under 40% from the field. But you scored 80, so we’ll ignore the rest for now.

Here’s tonight’s Final Word:

[SEMO 65, Bradley 66] Late game finishes aren’t supposed to come down to fouls. But a three-point play by Bradley’s Taylor Brown with 4.1 seconds left sent SEMO to their second loss on the season. Another strong outing for Leon Powell, who hit 7 of 8 from the field. But where is Lucas Nutt? 0 points, 2 assists in 29 minutes. Thankfully for the Redhawks, Marcus Brister continues to improve. Tonight was also a reminder that Nino Johnson is still a freshman, putting up only 2 points in 14 minutes.

[Loyola (IL) 61, Eastern Illinois 65] Okay Jeremy Granger, this is going to be another one of those inconsistent years, isn’t it. After 26 in the opener against Indiana State, you hit just 5 of 13, and put up 10 points in the Panthers win. Mike Miller continues to empty the bench, with 12 players seeing minutes. Full Recap
[Fisk 57, Tennessee State 81] So we’re glad to see that the Tigers can in fact score, but as I mentioned in the open, the shooting still isn’t there. The defense continues to be the Tigers strong point: Fisk was held to just 17 points in the first half. Another solid outing from Robert Covington, scoring 22 on 9 of 14 shooting.

You can't tell it from looking at the stat line AFTER the game but the refs set the tone for this one early. SEMO got hit hard early with fouls. Especially to our front line. Powell only played 23 minutes because of it. Nino got 2 fouls on him almost before he got in the game. Had 3 at the half and 4 early in the second half. That's why he only was in for 14 minutes. Powell, Johnson and Porter all ended up with 4 fouls. The following is a link to the shot and foul with 4 seconds left that gave Bradley the win.

The following is a comment that one of the SEMO posters (bambam) made about that play. He must know the refs. "The ref under the basket didn't even make the call, the call came from the ref out top. Pitiful. The ref under the basket btw, in position to make the call, was former 20+ yr NBA veteran ref Joe DeRosa. He didn't call it. The guy that did call the foul, from out of position, is in his first year of D1 ref'ing."

Even with all of that SEMO should still of won this game. The defense by their guards (except Brister) continues to be terrible. Bradley shot 55.3% from the floor. The real killer was SEMO was only 7-17 41.2% from the FT line. You won't win any close games shooting like that from the line. Even though most of our guards (except Brister) have a history of being very good 3pt shooters, they continue to put up bricks (4-16 25%). That has to change.

I have no doubt that if this game was on a neutral court SEMO would have won easily. But it wasn't. When you go on the road for these money games you know what your'e going to get. For SEMO to make that next step They have to find ways to eliminate these stupid mistakes and make FT. There are two much more telling games coming up that will let us know how far this team has come and that's home games against SMU and Miami (OH). By the way, Marcus Brister is BY FAR the most improved player on this team.

Thanks for all the info. I posted the video in a separate post...curious what others have to say about the call. I agree, they have to get these kind of wins to make the next step.
