A lot to get to in today’s final word despite just 2 games last night.
In case you haven’t yet seen, Tennessee State senior forward Kenny Moore has been suspended by the team.
Also, yesterday I posted the poll question asking which was worse: Jacksonville State loss to Division II San Francisco State or Austin Peay falling to 0-8 on the year. Apparently, expectations are everything, as 71% of you voted that Austin Peay’s 8 straight losses was the worst of the two options.
And for the second straight night, the OVC went 0-2.
How good (or bad, as may be the case) is the OVC this year? I’m starting to wonder…
Here’s tonight’s final word:
[Eastern Kentucky 43, Delaware State 57] Well, I was right about two things: I said not to expect a high scoring game. And both teams did a fine job of not scoring, although one did it really, really well. I also said don’t expect many turnovers. The two teams combined for just 12. The Colonels couldn’t hit shots from anywhere on the court…34% shooting, 23.5% from 3-point range, and just 46% from the FT line. Let’s take a trip back, why don’t we, to OVC Media Day, where EKU head coach Jeff Neubauer told me he thought he had the best group of shooters in years. Where are those shooters? On the season, the Colonels are under 40% from FG range and under 30% from 3-point range.
[SEMO 63, Arkansas State 79] Remember how I mention Leon Powell‘s foul trouble the other day, and how because of it he hadn’t played 25 minutes in a single game? Well, that streak is still alive. Powell fouls out in just 21 minutes of action, finishing with 12 points on 6-8 shooting. They have got to figure out how to get him playing more minutes, and that means he has to stay out of foul trouble. All 5 starters for the Red Wolves finish in double digits, with only 6 points coming off the bench. The Red Wolves also hit 55% from the field and 6-8 from 3-point range. Yes, the team averaging 50 points a game heading into tonight.
