I’ve had a few people ask me about anonymous comments over the past couple of days.
After much thought, I’ve decided to continue to allow anonymous comments here at OVC Ball.
There’s a few actually:
Anonymous comments personally don’t bother me. The only time I’m concerned by them is when someone hides behind the shield of anonymity to attack another person. So far, that hasn’t been the case.
I’m more concerned with the flow of ideas than who it is stating those ideas. There are many legitimate reasons why someone would want to remain anonymous on the web, and I can respect that.
Another reason is that for the first 6 months of it’s existence, I didn’t allow anonymous comments. Want to know how many comments I received over those 6 months? 4. Total. Since then, I’ve received many more comments.
And comments are good for the site. They help drive the conversation, and you all are the best fact checkers that I could ask for.
It also underlines the difference between this site and a message board in purpose. Message boards are meant primarily as a means of conversation and debate. While, as I mentioned above, comments do help drive conversation, the main purpose of this site isn’t conversation, rather information.
If a message board, which would require registration, is something the community wants at OVC Ball, that is something that could be arranged. Although that being said, there are already many great school message boards, many of which drive an amazing amount of traffic to the site. But there can always be more conversation, and that’s an idea I’m open to.
Further down the road, I may change my mind about anonymous commenting. But for now, I will continue to allow them
