I’ve had a few people ask me about anonymous comments over the past couple of days.

After much thought, I’ve decided to continue to allow anonymous comments here at OVC Ball.

The reason?

There’s a few actually:

Anonymous comments personally don’t bother me. The only time I’m concerned by them is when someone hides behind the shield of anonymity to attack another person. So far, that hasn’t been the case.

I’m more concerned with the flow of ideas than who it is stating those ideas. There are many legitimate reasons why someone would want to remain anonymous on the web, and I can respect that.

Another reason is that for the first 6 months of it’s existence, I didn’t allow anonymous comments. Want to know how many comments I received over those 6 months? 4. Total. Since then, I’ve received many more comments.

And comments are good for the site. They help drive the conversation, and you all are the best fact checkers that I could ask for.

It also underlines the difference between this site and a message board in purpose. Message boards are meant primarily as a means of conversation and debate. While, as I mentioned above, comments do help drive conversation, the main purpose of this site isn’t conversation, rather information.

If a message board, which would require registration, is something the community wants at OVC Ball, that is something that could be arranged. Although that being said, there are already many great school message boards, many of which drive an amazing amount of traffic to the site. But there can always be more conversation, and that’s an idea I’m open to.

Further down the road, I may change my mind about anonymous commenting. But for now, I will continue to allow them

  1. Anonymous:
    It's okay to hide.
  2. Kyle:
Many sites are doing away with annonymous comments forcing you to make 100 different accounts which can not only be annoying but your giving away your email. I am not sure if a lot of people even READ the policy of blog services or message boards when they sign up and a lot  of the policies can be very scary.
  3. Kyle Hill:
In extreme cases some sites are private where you have to log in just to VIEW it and that is very wrong on a lot of levels like for example you don't if the community is decent or has a lot of bullying that they don't want people to see. One large site called Sodar Island Forums *Thomas The Train* is an example of private forums which I don't know if they are any good or not and I am not wasting my time with them for that reason. Moderators will often side with bullies if the bully in quesiton has a high seniority over others thur contributing content to the site and if someone who is new ask a question that's very hard to find the new person will often get their head bitten off. Most people are probably not aware of a search section of a forum and may be new to message board functions.    I don't know a whole lot about message boards myself like what a lot of text icons or abbreviations mean and have to look them up if I am that curious. A word to the owner of this site:   My email is no longer working ever since I filled my computer up too much erasing it so Dad had to help me  reinstall my Windows 7 (which may be because Dad changed my address?)  I once noticed on my error message that  the address is no longer the one before the change which was the address I typed when putting my comments in.    When I try to sign in to my email the email account says there has been *suspicious activity* and was shut down sometime during the change and I cannot send or receive letters.
