Eastern Illinois picked up it’s first win of the season Wednesday night over Loyola(IL), to improve to 1-1 on the season. Loyola falls to 0-3 on the season. Alfonzo McKinnie led EIU with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 4 blocks. Jeremy Granger added 10 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds.
The game remained close throughout, with the biggest lead of 7 belonging to EIU at halftime. EIU played a physical game to challenge the size of Loyola’s frontcourt of Walt Gibler and Ben Averkamp by forcing 14 turnovers.
Freshman Joey Miller was fouled and scored on a layup with 51 seconds remaining, then made the free throw to put EIU up for good.
James Hollowell did not start for the second straight game, coming off the bench scoring 8 points. He’s been battling a bad back.
Freshman forward Josh Piper played 25 minutes, scoring 4 points and recording a block. Along with Nick McFarlin, Piper is the only legitimate big man on EIU.
