If you read today’s First Word I wasn’t exactly kind to the Skyhawks in saying their efficiency numbers showed they just aren’t a very good team.
Just barely edging out a lower division team isn’t exactly helping their cause.
They’re not the first OVC team to do so. That would be Tennessee Tech just sliding by Wilberforce by 1 earlier in the season. And I still have little doubt that the Golden Eagles will be a top 4 team in the OVC.
But still, it’s not exactly something you really want on your resume.
Here’s today’s Final Word.
[Bethel (TN) 83, UT Martin 86] So maybe the defense just isn’t good. I’ll be honest, I don’t want to say that about this team, because I like this team. But I simply just don’t have another explanation after allowing Bethel to shoot 59% from the floor, 53% from 3-point range, and only forcing 12 turnovers against the Wildcats. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen UTM’s opponents put up these kind of numbers, in fact it’s becoming almost common. But the silver lining again is the play of Myles Taylor, who scored a team high 22 points, and added 5 rebounds. So the Skyhawks can put up some points again this season, something I’ve been seriously wondering about. And UTM only committed 9 turnovers, which is a great number. But wins aren’t supposed to be this tough, but for a team just 2-9 heading into tonight’s contest, I’m sure they’ll take the wins any way they come.
