A quick injury update before getting to today’s preview: Sophomore guard Michael Messer will miss the rest of the season. Messer hasn’t played since being injured on December 10th against Hannibal-LaGrange.
Before being injured, Messer was averaging over 7 points a game, and playing 21 minutes. His production was actually down some from his freshman year with the Cougars.
Only one game on the schedule today, as No. 20 Murray State travels up north to face Eastern Illinois.
Here’s today’s First Word
[No. 20 Murray State (13-0, 1-0) at Eastern Illinois (6-5, 0-0), 7:00 p.m. CST, ESPN 3] Late travel decision: I will be here. Live coverage on Twitter @OVCBall
The Panthers perfect home record this season faces by far it’s biggest test, as they host the still undefeated Racers.
But if yesterday taught us anything, there’s no such thing as an automatic win on the road.
We’ve talked a lot about the Racers ability to force turnovers this season, but we’ve also seen against good ball handling teams they not always able to force their 19 per game average. EIU has been solid ball handling team, and will need to continue to be that tonight.
The Racers likely won’t be lacking for motivation: The Panthers ended the Racers home winning streak last season. But Murray won the last meeting between the schools, 66-53 at Lantz Gym last season.
