And Murray State’s struggles tonight set up what could be a fantastic game in Clarksville on Saturday between bitter rivals.
Here’s tonight’s Final Word;
[Eastern Kentucky 67, No. 19/18 Murray State 76] Full Recap
I’m seriously impressed with the Colonels after tonight. Their offense seems much more solid (read: less gimmicky) than in years past, and their poise in a tough, loud environment was commendable.
I guess that means I need to take back all the mean things I said last summer about this team. But there no way I, or anyone for that matter, could have predicted the rise of Jaron Jones this year.
And while I didn’t pick Murray State to dominate the conference, I did at least pick them to finish 2nd.
I don’t think this is the beginning of a fall for the Racers, simply just an off night. Now, in the interest of full disclosure, that’s just a gut feeling. No doubt the mood was a little down for the players during, and after the game from what it’s been in the past. And I would be more worried if the next game wasn’t against the Racers rivals. They have great motivation to shake off tonight’s rough night (and since when do we consider 48% shooting a rough night, anyway?) and if they win at Clarksville, it should get the Racers energy back to where it needs to be.
But I feel the worst is ahead for the Cougars, who once again are not able to get anything on offense going, which happens more often or not. And their defense just isn’t going to stop many teams anywhere.
One of the biggest complaints I’ve heard about the Panthers is that coach Mike Miller‘s son, Joey Miller gets too much playing time. Tonight, he put up 24 points and 5 assists. Wonder if I’ll still be hearing that complaint tomorrow…
And is Mike Miller reading OVC ball? Only 9 players play tonight, and every starter played at least 25 minutes, which is exactly what I said he needed to start doing in today’s first word. Only 2 points came off the bench, and a result 4 players finished in double digits. See what happens when you listen to me?
