Only one game on tap tonight, but it’s okay because Power Rankings will be out later today.
And I’m planning on taking my longest road trip of the season. Details forthcoming.
For now, here’s today’s First Word:
[Tennessee State (10-9, 3-3) at Austin Peay (5-13, 2-3)] 5 of the 11 OVC teams have 3 losses, including the two that play tonight, part of a complete log jam at the middle of the conference.
Neither team has been especially great on defense lately, which means I fully expect a defensive struggle out of these two teams tonight.
Robert Covington continues to fly under the radar this season, which is surprising from a consistent scorer averaging 17 points a game. Thanks to Murray’s dominance, we’re seeing a lot of things fly under the radar this season, but a lot of that has to do with TSU’s struggles in conference play. The Tigers won their last 4 non-conference games, before winning their first OVC game only to drop their last three.
Of course Austin Peay knows all about losing streaks after the start to their season, and another streak to start conference play. But the Governors have held home court well (with Murray State being an excusable exception) and are now in a position to make a run in the OVC. Their chances of a conference title are likely out the window, but a 2-seed in the OVC tournament means they only need wins, and another team might upset the Racers in the semi-finals again. But a 4th loss, and they’ll likely be forced to play in the quarter finals.
