Marty Mishow at the Southeast Missourian is reporting that 2 of 3 SEMO’s assistants will not be returning next year, but this may be a very different situation than the assistant that left EKU last week.
Mishow states that “sources” told him “Nutt wants to go in another direction with his coaching staff,” and that Nutt didn’t comment other than to say the coaches weren’t returning.
He also states that one of the assistants, Kyle Gerdeman told him that he wasn’t given “the option to return,” essentially a nice way of saying he was fired.
SEMO didn’t exactly having a bad season, especially given they are just 3 years removed from a 0-18 season in the OVC. But on that same note, there is probably a feeling that the team should have done better. After a 7-2 start, the Redhawks finishing the regular season 2-5, falling from the 2nd seed to the 5th. It put them in position to bounced by Tennessee Tech in the 2nd round of the OVC Tournament.
But part of that hot start has to be attributed to their schedule, which was very friendly before their first meetup against the Racers. In fact, in those 9 games, they only played 2 teams that finished higher than them in the final standings.
It appears that Dickie Nutt is done “rebuilding” the Redhawks, and expects to be a top tier team. The question: Do they have the talent to meet that expectation?
This could be a very interesting year in Cape Girardeau, especially if the Redhawks don’t over perform the 9-7 record they had this season in the OVC.
