The Daily Eastern News is reporting that Eastern Illinois will hold a press conference on Monday to officially name Jay Spoonhour as the new head basketball coach at EIU.

Spoonhour has been away from NCAA Division I basketball for a few years, coaching at Moberly Area Community College. But he spent many years as  D-I assistant coach, including stints at Missouri, Saint Louis, UNLV, Texas-San Antonio and Valparaiso and was an interim head coach at UNLV. He also won a the NJCAA national championship at Wabash College.

He also comes from a coaching pedigree. His father, Charlie Spoonhour, was a long time college coach, and passed away in February.

I think this is a great hire for EIU. You’re getting a more seasoned coach than the other finalists, and one that has proven they can win, even if it wasn’t on the NCAA Division I level.

But he’s got a major uphill challenge ahead of him, so his skills as a recruiter will be immediately tested.
