As a general rule, when a head coach leaves a school for greener pastures, I love when they can promote their next coach from within. Tennessee State has done just that, promoting 3-year assistant Travis Williams to head coach today.

Williams has taken somewhat of an odd path to collegiate head coach. Before joining former coach John Cooper at TSU, Williams served as head coach of the Dongguan Parklane Snow Wolf Professional Basketball Club in China’s National Basketball League (NBL) during the 2009 preseason. Before that, he was the head coach of Division II Fort Valley State University.

Obviously, this hire has mostly positive ramifications for the TSU program, especially when it comes to keeping the talented players that helped TSU have one of their most successful years in recent history this past season. The school also deserves a lot of credit for doing this fairly quickly, and not stretching out their search.
