The College Basketball season has officially come to a close. Well, the fun part with the games. There’s still recruiting, and summer practices, and some coach hiring, and other messy things to take care of. But for probably at least 75% of us, basketball season is in the back of our minds until November rolls around.
And for some reason that’s beyond me, more awards were handed out this week. Award season…shouldn’t be an actual season.
Here’s this week’s Weekly Web Wrap:
You didn’t like The Fray’s rendition of the National Anthem. Don’t worry, neither did I. In fact more people hated it (64%) than the other options combined.
You’re also pretty down on UT Martin’s chances of rebounding next season, which I can’t blame you for. 47% thought the Skyhawks will have 3 or fewer wins next season (including one who thinks they’ll go winless again) but 32% agreed with me that they’ll probably be somewhere near the .500 mark. One was even so bold to give UTM 10 wins next year.
On OVC Ball
Our What Went Wrong series began with the Skyhawks. Plenty to pick from there…
A lot of you were upset when Murray State was left out of this year’s One Shining Moment. I wasn’t.
There was good news for the Racers, as we all get to see Isaiah Canaan type “Leggoooo” on Twitter approx. 3,245 times next season. Give or Take. He’ll return for his season season.
EKU loses an assistant, which might be a bit of a headscratcher (although not really)
And a few former OVC-ers are making their mark in “The Association.”
I’m not a huge fan of postseason awards, much like I’m not a huge fan of arbitrarily given rankings. But that doesn’t mean they’re not at least worth a mention:
Ivan Aska was named to the senior-exclusive Riley Wallace All-America Team, which is a concept I like. Reward those that stick it out for 4 years.
Racers head coach Steve Prohm was named the inaugural winner of the “First year coach” exclusive Joe B. Hall trophy.
TSU’s Robert Covington was named a BoxToRow.com First Team HBCU All-American.
And SIU Edwardsville wins both the Men’s and Women’s Sportsmanship awards for basketball.
And although they’re not in the conference yet, 2 of Belmont’s seniors picked up multiple awards.
Other OVC Links
This is neat. Belmont’s Mick Hedgepath was named a Finalist for the Lowe’s senior CLASS award, and got to take in this year’s Final Four.
Belmont has also named their season ticket promotion for next season. Other OVC schools should get on this. This is how you fill seats: start early.
CBS Sports Top 25 (and 1) amuses me. Especially when the Racers are the “and 1” in a ridiculously early Top 25 poll for next year.
College Basketball Links
UConn’s appeal to be let in the NCAA Tournament despite their low APR scores because…well they’re UCONN, is denied. No NCAA Tournament for the Huskies. And the Big East may keep them out of the conference tournament as well.
I’m not sure how this has happened. Not only has Bruce Weber landed another Power 6 Conference job, but the man that followed him at SIU Carbondale, and subsequently ran the program straight into the ground, is now his assistant again. Actually, that makes complete sense. Except that both have landed on their feet way too well.
CBS Sports does a “pictures of the month” post every…well month, and they’re always spectacular. This month‘s is no exception.
Other Sports Links
I don’t think you can ever be truly “unhireable” in College Football. But Bobby Petrino is trying really, really, hard to do so.
Speaking of coaches trying to make themselves unhireable, why would you let this get caught on tape, Gregg Williams? You’re not the only D-coordinator to say similar things, this much I’m sure of, but the NFL, if not the legal system, is about to make a really big example out of you.
Tweet of the Week
RT @JonHigdon (on Canaan’s return)
@ESPNAndyKatz Maybe that will be enough time for Austin Peay to figure out how to guard him. @OVCBall
Step 1: Identify Canaan…
Non Sports Link of the Week
Nothing really great I found this week, except for 25 strange flavors of Lay’s Potato Chips from around the world.
Numb and Spicy Red Pot sounds interesting.
I’ll stay away from the Ketchup flavored ones though…
