13 years is a long time to be an assistant coach, much less one at the same program. But that’s how long Scott Combs has been with the Governors basketball program…until now. Combs will take over a Martin Methodist program coming off a successful season in NAIA, leaving a program he’s been with since joining the Governors as a player in the 1996-97 season.
Martin Methodist was 28-7 last season, with their coach leaving the program to take over at Southern Arkansas. Those are high expectations for a coach taking his first ever head coaching job.
(Not that we haven’t seen coaches succeed in their first season or anything…)
In talking about his departure, Austin Peay head coach Dave Loos calls Combs his “day-to-day” guy, a position not taken lightly by the athletic director / coach.
“I am excited about him getting the opportunity to be a head coach. Most guys in this business aspire to that. I wish him well.”
