[Update, 5:24 p.m. It appears Morehead’s not waiting after all. Sources: Sean Woods to be named coach.]
It appears like it’s down to 3.
With the last “finalist” interviewing today, a decision could be on the horizon.
According to Michael Grant of the Courier-Journal, (link goes to Twitter page) Morehead State is set to interview Sean Woods, current head coach at Mississippi Valley State, today.
So where’s the smart money?
If Graves truly is interested, (and all signs point to that he is) I would think he would be a front runner by far. O’Conner, being familiar with the team, is the next logical choice, even though he’s only been with the program for 2 years. While Woods is a talented coach, I feel he is likely on the outside looking in, so to speak.
Time will soon tell.
No decision is expected today, but it is very likely we’ll see one made sometime early next week.
Honestly, I don’t see the program doing wrong with either of these three coaches. Especially given how late in the coaching carousel they’ve been forced to look, they gotten a great crop of candidates.
If they could be the ones to pull Graves, I think they could become a top tier team year in and year out, on the level we expect from Murray State and Belmont.
No matter who they pick, I don’t see them having instant success. They just simply don’t have the talent there this year. But in the OVC, quick turnarounds are common, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Morehead State competing for a title again sooner rather than later.
