Best banquet ever?
At Wednesday’s night awards banquet, SIUE’s athletic director, Dr. Brad Hewitt, announced that Lennox Forrester had received a 3-year contract extension.
There’s no doubt that Lennox and the Cougars overperformed last season. Picked last in the conference (by a wide margin at that) the Cougars finished 6-10 in their first full season in OVC play.
It’s brings up a few interesting questions when you think about it. Their first two years of transition were hardly “good,” but to a point, that has to be expected. The team has gotten better each year since making the transition.
But there aren’t a lot of places that 10-17 will net you 3 more years.
Am I saying that the program is wrong to give him the extension? No. When UT Martin made the transition, it took 8 years before they had a winning season. It’s not an easy transition to make, and with the play at the top end of the conference (having Kenneth Faried the two years previous and Murray State’s run this year) it’s not exactly an “easy” conference to notch wins in. (Although, let’s be fair, the bottom of the conference hasn’t been solid. Looking at you Skyhawks)
3 years isn’t an eternity, and if things go south, it’s one the school can likely get out of in 2. It’s a safe contract, and one Lennox deserves given his success in his first full season in the OVC.
