[UPDATE: 5/12: We finally have more than mysterious “sources” to go with. WKYT says Morehead State athletic director Brian Hutchinson has confirmed that Woods will be named the next head coach.]
Multiple organizations are citing “sources” that Sean Woods is set to become the new head coach at Morehead State University.
AllKyHoops.com is reporting that the school will hold a press conference on Monday to announce the hire.
First thing you need to know about this hire: This news was broken after 5:00 p.m. on a Friday of a holiday weekend. If you ever want to bury a news story, perfect time to do so. Maybe that’s just coincidence. But given a lot of people had their hopes up for Butler assistant Matthew Graves, or even current Morehead assistant Wade O’Conner, the timing has to be considered somewhat suspect. I doubt this is going to be a popular hire.
As I stated earlier, I felt Woods was the 3rd choice of the so called finalists. Woods does have Kentucky roots as an ex-Kentucky Wildcat, and this past season led Mississippi Valley State to the NCAA Tournament.
While obviously a bit of a letdown with one of the top assistants in the nation’s name floating around…I still feel like this is a positive hire. He’s proven he can win at the low-major level, and his history in the Bluegrass State make him a great fit for Morehead State.
Woods will also have the distinction of being the first African American basketball coach in Morehead State history.
