KANSAS CITY, Mo. – – Four Belmont University men’s basketball student-athletes were named to the 2011-12 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court Tuesday.

The NABC Honors Court recognizes the highest achieving student-athletes in college basketball, and adds to the lofty tradition of the Belmont men’s basketball program.

Recent graduates Adam Barnes (Clarksville, Tenn.), Drew Hanlen (St. Louis, Mo.), Mick Hedgepeth (Crossville, Ala.) and Scott Saunders (New Orleans, La.) represented Belmont on this year’s NABC Honors Court.

To qualify for the NABC Honors Court, a student-athlete must:

1.      Be a junior or senior of academic standing

2.      Hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2011-12 academic year

3.      Have matriculated at least one year at their current institution

4.      Be a member of an NCAA Division I, II, III or NAIA institution

Belmont’s four honorees paced the Ohio Valley Conference this year. Barnes, Hanlen, Hedgepeth and Saunders were joined by Nick McFarlin of Eastern Illinois, Ty Proffitt of Morehead State, Nick Niemczyk of Southeast Missouri State, Chris Conner of Tennessee State, and Riley Hunter of Tennessee Tech.

The Bruin quartet plus former Belmont forward Jon House (Guelph, Ont., Canada) were the lone Atlantic Sun Conference representatives a year ago.

Last month, Belmont men’s basketball received Public Recognition in the NCAA’s annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) report. In fact, Belmont is one of only six institutions in Division I men’s basketball to make the Public Recognition List every year since inception in 2006 (Brigham Young, Brown, Columbia, Davidson, and Princeton are the other five).

Belmont, which has earned an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament five of the last seven years, officially joined the Ohio Valley Conference July 1.
