NASHVILLE, Tenn. – – Belmont University men’s basketball head coach Rick Byrd announced Tuesday the addition of incoming transfer student-athlete Drew Windler.

Windler, a 6-9 forward from South Milwaukee, Wisc., spent the previous three years at Samford University.

After redshirting in 2009-10, Windler developed into one of the most productive frontcourt players in the Southern Conference. This past season, the versatile swingman ranked among the SoCon leaders in five categories, including second in three-point field goal percentage (.426) and ninth in scoring (14.4) en route to Third Team All-SoCon honors.

“Belmont University and our basketball program are very fortunate to add Drew Windler to our team,” Byrd said. “He is a young man of great character who has stood out on the basketball floor and in the classroom. He is a young man with size and great offensive versatility, making him a natural fit for our offensive style. He is an outstanding three point shooter, and passes the ball very well from both the perimeter and out of the post. Our staff and players are excited about Drew’s addition to our team as we head into the OVC.”

Windler averaged 16.4 points per game in league play, and tallied double figures against National Champion Kentucky, Maryland, and Davidson. He scored a career-high 27 points at Western Carolina Feb. 23.

A four-sport athlete in high school, Windler made 57 starts at Samford.

Moreover, he was named to the 2010-11 SoCon Winter Academic All-Conference Team and received Samford’s 2011 Scholastic Award.

Belmont, one of three NCAA Division I programs to earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament five of the last seven years, will begin play in the Ohio Valley Conference this season.
