Scout.com is reporting that a former 4-star recruit and Ohio State running back, Jaamal Berry is heading to Murray State, where he’ll become instantly able to play with 2 years eligibility remaining.
Their source, Berry himself, who they quote as saying “I’m excited to be headed to Murray State.”
So when WPSD Local 6 reached out to Murray State’s Sports Information Director for comment, how does he respond?
Berry playing for the Racers is “nothing but rumors.”
Somebody want to let Berry know that? Because he sounds fairly certain.
So where’s the disconnect?
Murray’s SID added that Berry wasn’t enrolled at Murray, and that could very well be the missing puzzle piece here. Schools and coaching aren’t allowed to comment in most situations about recruits transferring, until after they’ve officially done so.
…and that won’t be until Berry is officially enrolled.
(BTW: Most people know this rule thanks to Lane Kiffen, who infamously didn’t know this rule when he took over at Tennessee.)
So what do we take from the conflicting reports?
Scout is about as reputable as it gets when it comes to recruiting, especially when their source is the kid himself. But since it’s not official, there’s still time for another team to swoop in and try to draw Berry, who was clearly once considered a considerable talent, to their school.
Berry was released from Ohio State this spring while facing assault charges, according to Yahoo! Sports.
Right now, I’d put the odds at better than 95% he’ll be in Murray’s backfield in September.
