If there was a silver lining to Latreze Mushatt‘s Achilles tendon tear a few weeks ago, it was the possibility that he might get a medical redshirt, and return for a full season in 2013-14.
Now, it doesn’t appear like that’s going to happen.
Murray State head coach Steve Prohm told WPSD Local 6 that his compliance office has told him that getting a 6th year is almost impossible, saying that a 6th year of eligibility is usually only granted to players who have had to sit out two years for injuries (and not even always then)
Mushatt sat out one year while transferring from UMKC, under NCAA rules, which granted him a 5th year of eligibility: this season.
So what’s next for Mushatt, and the Racers?
Prohm said that Mushatt may be able to return by February, but also noted he was ahead of schedule, so it’s possible he could return sooner.
Until then, players like Brandon Garrett and new Racers like Dexter Fields will have to plug the hole until then.
