Eastern Illinois head men’s basketball coach Jay Spoonhour has signed his first recruit for the 2013 class with the addition of Wisconsin post player Jake Verhagen. Verhagen signed his national letter of intent this week as he begins his senior season at Appleton West High School.
A 6’6 post player, Verhagen averaged 16 points and 7 rebounds as a junior earning first team All-Fox Valley League honors as he led the conference in rebounding. He was an All-Area selection and was named a Fab 5 preseason Top 5 selection. He is rated as the 26th best player in the state and Appleton West is ranked 8th in the Wisconsin preseason poll.
“Jake is a highly ranked player in Wisconsin and that’s great,” said Spoonhour. “The thing we like about him the most is he is a physical player who can go get a rebound. He has a high skill level and likes to play. He is going to only get better and improve.
“He is a smart player, a tough kid and a guy we want to have in our program.”
As the only junior on the Fox Valley League team he had six games with 20 or more points. His season high of 32 came in a win over Oshkosh West HS. He becomes the 18th player from Wisconsin to commit to a NCAA Division I school this season.
Eastern Illinois is currently playing at the Eastern Michigan Ice Man Classic. The Panthers dropped a 60-52 contest to host EMU last night and will continue tournament action with a game this evening at 3:30 p.m. CT versus Texas Pan American.
