The Eastern Kentucky University football team is lined up to play 12 teams in 2013, marking the first time in 10 years the Colonels will play this many games in the regular season. EKU has six home games on the schedule including Homecoming, which is slated for Oct. 19 against Tennessee Tech.
A pair of ‘firsts since 1993’ will occur next fall. First, the Colonels kick off the season with a home Thursday night opener against Robert Morris on Aug. 29. The last time Eastern began the year with a home Thursday night game was Sept. 2, 1993 versus Western Kentucky. Secondly, EKU will visit its former OVC rival Morehead State for the first time since Nov. 20, 1993. The previous four meetings between the two teams have taken place at Roy Kidd Stadium. Morehead State, which is a member of the Pioneer Football League, is set to host the Colonels on Saturday, Sept. 21.
Eastern does not have to travel far for its other road non-conference game. Louisville, which won the Big East’s bid to the Bowl Championship Series this year, will welcome the Colonels to Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium on Sept. 7. The Cardinals have won the last two meetings including a 23-13 decision in 2010.
Family Weekend is set for Sept. 14 against 2012 Big South champion Coastal Carolina. EKU won the first-ever meeting between the two programs with a convincing 35-17 win over the Chanticleers this past September.
Eastern Kentucky begins Ohio Valley Conference action on Sept. 28 with a showdown at 2012 league champion Eastern Illinois. The Panthers used a 24-7 victory over the Colonels on Oct. 27 to catapult themselves into the FCS playoffs.
The 2013 Homecoming game features Tennessee Tech on Oct. 19. The Colonels have won five of the last six match-ups against the Golden Eagles at Roy Kidd Stadium.
The other two home games are scheduled for Nov. 2 against Tennessee State and Nov. 16 versus UT Martin. TSU is 3-1 against Eastern under head coach Dean Hood including a last-second 23-20 win in Nashville this year. UT Martin has never won in Richmond, dropping all 11 tilts.
The NCAA FCS playoffs expand from 20 to 24 teams in 2013 and will feature 16 teams playing in the opening round on Nov. 30.
Times for all games will be announced at a later date.
Eastern Kentucky (8-3, 6-2 OVC) was left out of the 2012 FCS playoffs, but finished the regular season ranked No. 16 in FCS coaches poll and No. 21 in The Sports Network poll.
