This has already been a surprising offseason for OVC football. And it just got even more surprising.
Austin Peay head coach Rich Christophel, who has a career record of 20-46 and coming off a 2-9 season at Austin Peay, is going to the the NFL. The school has confirmed that Christophel has been hired by the Arizona Cardinals as Tight Ends coach.
Christophel has been with the Governors, his alma mater for the past six seasons. Prior to accepting his first head-coaching assignment at his APSU, he spent more than a dozen seasons at UAB. From 1991-94, he worked at Mississippi State, where he was a coaching associate of Bruce Arians, the new Arizona Cardinals head coach.
Christophel came out of the gates fast at Austin Peay, putting up a 7-5 (5-3) record his first season, but has struggled as of late, going just 1-7 against the OVC this past year.
Austin Peay will begin their search for their 18th head coach immediately.
