A very weird schedule this week. With Bracketbusters on the horizon, most games were pushed to Wednesday.
That is all except one. At least it’s a big game, as far as the OVC Tournament is concerned.
UT Martin 7-18 (4-9) at Tennessee Tech 9-16 (3-10)
7:00 p.m. CST
A loss doesn’t eliminate Tennessee Tech. But it makes things much, much harder for the Golden Eagles. A win by UT Martin moves the Skyhawks into eighth, for now, with two games left to play.
It’s pretty clear how both teams are in this position: The worst defense (UT Martin) is facing the worse offense. (Tennessee Tech) Both teams share the same relative strengths: Both teams are solid on the boards, and both shooting exactly 73% from the free-throw line.
The concern for UT Martin is that the Skyhawks have only won game on the road all season long. This is the first of three straight road conference games to close out the season, and the Skyhawks need to win two to be safely into the OVC Tournament field.
The Golden Eagles are coming off a narrow loss at home to Morehead State, which has put their backs against a wall. With a loss tonight, they can still get in the OVC Tournament if TTU wins out, UT Martin gets to six wins, SIUE beats EIU on the final day of the season, Austin Peay loses at least one more game and there aren’t crazy upsets involving one of those teams. Like I said, not mathematically eliminated. Just everything but.
