So if bracketbusters didn’t fulfill your want for mostly meaningless non-conference February games, there’s another today.
Yep, this preview is going to be filled with all sorts of sarcasm. It’s that kind of game.
Game of the Century
Eastern Illinois 9-20 (5-10) at Chicago State 8-19 (2-4 Great West)
It’s a battle of two heavyweights in Illinois as Chicago State host Eastern Illinois for supremacy is a game whose impact will resonate for years to come.
Okay, sarcasm over.
Chicago State isn’t an offensive powerhouse by any measure. They play fairly up-tempo, but average just 65 points a game. Much like Eastern Illinois, the Cougars have two 10-point per game scorers. They turn the ball over at a high clip, but on the plus side they’re a good rebounding team, and more solid defensively than the Panthers.
You can make the argument that this game is important for momentum. The Panthers are coming off a win against Northern Illinois, and a win could help with a virtual must-win this Saturday against SIU Edwardsville which will likely be for an OVC Tournament spot.
We’ve talked a lot about Sherman Blandford this season, but another Panther, guard Morris Woods has been flying somewhat under the radar. The junior struggled to score in non-conference play, but is averaging 13 ppg in OVC play.
These schools have played six times in the last 12 years, with EIU winning five of the six.
