Austin Peay is adding another offensive threat. The Governors have kicked off the spring signing period by announcing the signing of Markee Mazyck, junior college nation’s No. 3 scorer in the 2012-13 season.

The 6’5″, 235-pound forward averaged 22.5 points per game as a sophomore at Frederick (Md.) Community College, shooting 44.4 percent from the floor that included 34 percent (53 of 156) from three-point shooting range.

“One of the big things Markee will bring to our ball club is his ability to score,” APSU coach Dave Loos said. “He scored more than 2000 points in his high school career and was third in nation in scoring this at Frederick this past year.

Mazyck proved he can get to the free-throw line (217/7.5 times per game), connecting on 78.3 percent of those attempts. He also averaged 6.7 rebounds per game and was the team’s co-captain.

“He played for two great coaches in the D.C. area. He played at Cesar Chavez High School for one of the high school coaching legends in Malcolm Battle and a great junior college coach in Dave Miller (at Frederick CC). He was well coached along the way.”

Mazyck earned second-team Junior College All-America honors as a sophomore. In prep school, he played at Cesar Chavez, where he finished with 2,176 career points. He twice was chosen as the D.C. Charter Player of the Year.

He is expected to play a major role in replacing senior forward Anthony Campbell, who left as one of the Top 15 scorers in APSU history.

“Markee can score inside and out,” Loos said. “He can face up, make the jump shot, including the three. And yet, he doesn’t mind a bit, in fact, enjoys taking you into the post. He has a big, strong body and can score inside as well. But he is more than just a scorer. Markee adds to our team in a number of different ways.”
