A former local prep player, IUPUI transfer Lyonell Gaines has committed to Morehead State University, according to multiple media outlets.
Gaines, a 6-foot-7 forward, played at Louisville Eastern High School.
Gaines told AllKYHoops that the main reason he chose the eagles is because of their coaching staff. “They have everything it takes for me to reach the next level,” Gaines said “and I feel they can make me a pro.”
“I love that they play a fast tempo,” he added. “The program is already on the rise and is only going to get better with Coach Sean Woods and the guys he is bringing in along with myself.”
As a sophomore, Gaines played in 32 games, but started just nine for the Jaguars. He did average 20 minutes a contest, but saw his minutes and his scoring fall slightly from his freshman year, averaging 5.3 points a game as a sophomore. A 50% shooter, Gaines also pulled down more the four rebounds a contest.
According to the Courier-Journal, Gaines also had transfer offers from Florida Atlantic, Northern Kentucky and more than 20 NCAA Division II schools.
Gaines will sit out the 2013-14 season under NCAA transfer rules.
