It’s been no mystery that Jacksonville State wants out of the Ohio Valley Conference. The Gamecocks have been looking for a FBS conference to move to, despite their relative struggles in FCS football.
It appears the Sun Belt, which has been ravaged by realignment could be calling soon. Key word: could.
According to Brent Thibodeaux, a writer covering Texas State, Jacksonville State is on a short list to join the Sun Belt. According to Thibodeaux, the conference is currently targeting James Madison, and if it falls through they’ll move to Liberty. If neither of those were to make the jump, Jacksonville State would be next on the list.
Thibodeaux says it doesn’t appear JMU will make the jump, leaving Liberty and Jacksonville State as the next options. He adds the Sun Belt wants to add a team by the end of April.
Even if Jacksonville State doesn’t make the leap this time, the fact they’re being considered could have a big impact down the road, as conference realignment doesn’t appear to be reaching a stopping point anytime soon.
