[Update]

That deal has been finalized. The two schools have scheduled a press conference for Monday in St. Louis to officially announce the game.

Interestingly enough, this year is the 100th anniversary of their first game as football rivals.

The game will be the first in the 7-year-old Busch Stadium’s history.

[Original Story]

File this under “unexpected surprises.”

According to The Southern, Southern Illinois and Southeast Missouri are nearing a deal that would move their football game scheduled for September 21st to Busch Stadium in St. Louis. For those who aren’t baseball fans, Busch Stadium is the home of the St. Louis Cardinals.

If the deal is finalized, this is one of those deals I both get, and don’t get. I understand from a media (and alumni) point of view why this makes sense. But these kind of games tend to have lower than average attendance, as fans of both schools are forced to travel, although the novelty of the event could be a factor in it’s favor.

If you’re wondering, it was SEMO’s Athletic Director that approached SIU’s AD about the potential of playing in St. Louis, according to the paper.
