After conducting a national search, Austin Peay has selected Derek van der Merwe as their new athletic director, taking over after Dave Loos stepped down after 16 years.

Derek van der MerweVan der Merwe was previously the Deputy Director of Athletics and Chief Operating Officer at Central Michigan University. He has spent the past 16 years at Central Michigan and played football for the Chippewas.

During the past decade at CMU, the university has won 45 Mid-American Conference Championships, and had grade point averages over 3.0 along with a graduation rate over 75 percent.

He chaired a $22 million University Event Center Commitee for a new basketball arena and fitness center, negotiated a deal with Adidas and reorganized a $5 million model for a Grant-in-Aid scholarship program.

The Govs brought in five finalists  and were interviewed on campus in late May for the top athletics position. Van der Merwe will take over officially as the new athletic director July 8.
