When NBA summer league play began this week, I didn’t expect to spend much time following it. Sure, we had plenty of OVC players in the fold, but after the letdown on draft night, and with Isaiah Canaan‘s apparent ankle injury, I didn’t hold high exceptions.
Shame on me.
Ian Clark‘s amazing week continued yesterday with a 15-point performance in a 29 minutes for the Heat summer league team in a 94-80 win over the host Orlando Magic. Through three games (in three back-to-back-to-back days) Clark is averaging 16.3 points on 49% shooting from the field.) After playing just 16 minutes in the opener, the former Belmont standout has led the team in minutes in the last two contests.
There’s already some in the Miami media saying the team should sign Clark to a short term contract, and keep the Memphis, Tennessee native from playing for Golden State next week in Las Vegas, instead continuing to play with the defending champions.
Whether he stays with the Heat or not, I have little doubt that Clark is well on his way to a NBA contract with someone, whether it be in Miami or somewhere else.
When you’ve only got two weeks to prove yourself, you have to make yourself stand out. Ian Clark is doing just that.
Clark and the Heat return to action Thursday against Detroit. Tip-off is set for Noon CST with live coverage on NBA TV and NBA Summer League Live online.
