Former Missouri Southern and St. Louis point guard Christian Salecich is the latest addition to the Cougars roster.
According to College Basketball Talk, Salecich joins the Cougars after being forced by the NCAA to sit out last season due to eligibility concerns. Salecich played a year in Australia after high school, before joining the Lions. Missouri Southern applied for an eligibility waiver, which was denied by the NCAA.
Now, it appears Salecich got that year back.
In our SIUE ridiculously early preview, we said that the backcourt was already mired, and the teams major needs appeared to be in the frontcourt. This…doesn’t really help change things in the least. Salecich will be one of the Cougars few seniors, but between sitting out the last year, and averaging just 4.5 points per game in his two seasons prior at Saint Louis, I can’t imagine Salecich breaking into the starting five. He will add some depth at the guard position, but that wasn’t exactly a concern to begin with.
Thanks to the internet, we also found this gem of a dunk during a game of horse during an SLU practice, in which Salecich performs the rare “starting a dunk with his shirt on… and finishing it with his shirt off” play.
Not usually my first choice in a game of horse…but hey, seems effective. If nothing else, I’m sure it makes him a hit with the ladies.
This brings the number of newcomers to the SIUE program next season up to five, with only one being a true freshman. He also has the services of two other transfers eligible after sitting out a season.
