This is the year of the new quarterback in the OVC. Seven of the OVC’s nine programs won’t return last year’s starting signal caller, leaving quite a few interesting battles heading into the fall.
UT Martin is no exception. Currently, juniors Dylan Favre (who is related to a certain star QB with the same last name), Tyler Rice, sophomore Jarod Neal and freshman Khalid Hagens are all looking to replace Derek Carr
So now is two-sport star, and two-time Tennessee Mr. Football, Jake Overby. According to the Jackson Sun, Overby is working out with the team after transferring from Ole Miss, where he played baseball. He’ll play both sports for UTM, and because he’s going from a FBS to an FCS school, he’s eligible immediately, at least on the gridiron.
Which means add him to the quarterback battle.
Simpson played down Overby’s chances somewhat to the paper, saying the junior is two years removed from football. Of course, as a two time Mr. Football, (and was a finalist a third year) something tells me he’ll pick back up on it pretty quickly.
In case you were wondering, Overby is a pretty skilled baseball player as well, picked in the 10th round of the MLB draft out of high school, choosing instead to join his brother at Ole Miss. If he plays this year, (which he is applying with the NCAA to do) he could be eligible for the draft again this summer.
