Here’s the thing…I wasn’t going to post the FCS coaches poll. I don’t like preseason polls. More often than not it’s a group of individuals, in this case coaches, who look at which teams were good last year, and tweaks based on whether they can think of anyone really good graduating.
I’m sure some do more than that. But I’m pretty sure the vast majority of coaches aren’t taking time away from their own team to look at how the teams should be ranked.
And then the poll comes out. Jacksonville State, UT Martin, Tennessee Tech, and Tennessee State all receive votes from the 26 coaches that take part. Eastern Illinois is 23rd, continuing last year’s trend of getting no respect from the FCS coaches, EKU leads the way at 19th. Pretty standard stuff.
Except it’s not standard at all. Someone ranked EKU No. 1. Not number one in the OVC…number one in the nation.
23 other first place votes went to North Dakota State. Another went to the No. 2 ranked team, Montana State. Another to the No. 4 ranked team, Sam Houston State. And the last one to the No. 19 ranked EKU Colonels
I get that being an OVC blogger, I should be for this. Except there’s a problem…
It has no basis in reality once-so-ever. The OVC hasn’t won a game in the FCS playoffs for two presidential administrations. EKU wasn’t even picked by OVC coaches and SID’s as the best team in the conference.
But they’re the best team in the nation?
No. They’re not.
I’m not saying that as an attack against EKU, a school whose fans mostly think I dislike them for some reason. (Probably because I’m willing to write things like this) I’m just saying that putting Eastern Kentucky as the best team in the nation, right now, with what we know about EKU, about North Dakota State, and really the Missouri Valley Football Conference in general, there isn’t a single rational argument for them being picked No. 1.
It’s why no other coaches agreed. It’s why most other coaches have them outside the top-15.
EKU may make me look foolish by year’s end. It wouldn’t be the first time.
But someone, ANYONE, give me one real reason why EKU deserves to be voted as the best team in the nation.
Seriously, there’s a comment section below. Please…try.
