The Ohio Valley Conference has a new touchdown throwing king. With a 30-yard touchdown pass to Keiondre Gober in the first quarter of Saturday’s game against Eastern Kentucky, EIU quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo passed former Panther and current NFL quarterback Tony Romo to become the OVC’s all time leader with his 86th touchdown.
It didn’t take long to top another record. In the second, Garoppolo became the conference’s all time yardage leader, having thrown for more than 9,996 yards over his career.
Today’s touchdown pass is already the 21st of the season for Garoppolo, less than a quarter into the team’s fifth game of the season. Coming into today’s game, the signal caller was hitting 65% of his passes, and averaging over 430 yards a game through the air.
Making the numbers even more impressive, two of EIU’s four opponents this season have been FBS teams.
Garoppolo is climbing the school’s all-time yardage ladder as well. EIU alum and NFL head coach Sean Payton holds that mark at 10,665 yards. (That was set previous to EIU joining the OVC, hence the difference conference / school records)
