Michael German‘s two-game suspension is up at Tennessee State, but last year’s starter will be relegated to a backup role for Week 3.
According to the Tennessean, TSU head coach Rod Reed says German may or may not play, depending how well redshirt freshman Ronald Butler does in his third start. It’s not meant as an additional punishment; rather playing backup will give German a chance to “knock off the rust” from missing all of Spring camp and the first two weeks of the season.
If Butler does play well, he could keep the starting job presumably the rest of the season, although I’d be greatly surprised to see that happen.
Butler has been fair in his first two weeks, but there’s little question the playcalling has been more conservative with Butler under center than last season with German at the helm. I’d be surprised if German in the game this weekend, and back at the top of the depth chart when OVC play begins.
