It’s that time of year again, the College Basketball season is just around the corner. A lot of buzz was surrounding Southeast Missouri today at OVC Media Day in Nashville, Tennessee.
With 13 first place votes in the west, SEMO lies ahead of their rival Murray State, who finished with 11 votes. Eastern Kentucky is the favorite to win the OVC East with 18 votes.
Both teams have already gone through significant losses before this season as Zay Jackson has suffered a torn ACL and Michael Porter endured a career ending injury.
SEMO will face some key losses last season as guards Corey Wilford, Marland Smith, and Nick Niemczyk have graduated. This season, it’s all up to their strong inside game with senior forward Tyler Stone and junior forward Nino Johnson, who both received OVC Preseason honors. Stone has been named the OVC Preseason Player of the Year.
A key edition for SEMO will be Auburn transfer Josh Langford, who is eligible to play in the second school year semester.
Well, out of the gate, the first conference game will already loom large as SEMO gets set to face Murray State on the road on January 2nd in a very early conference showdown.
With high expectations, this season may provide a lot of excitement in the conference race as this program is certainly on the rise.
A week from today, SEMO will tip off exhibition play against Hannibal-Lagrange and closing out exhibition play against Ouachita Baptist on November 2nd.
The season will officially get underway on November 8th, a tough road test in an in-state battle against reigning Atlantic 10 Champions, St. Louis.
