He verbally committed this summer, but now Jalen Henry (pictured above) has made it official. The 6’8 forward from Springfield has signed with SIU Edwardsville. So have three other sizable players: 6’9 Michael Chandler, 6’6 Keenan Simmons, and 6’6 Jake Newtown.
Back in August, Henry told Chicago Hoops “SIUE was my choice because in my view and my parents view it was my best for me. The coaching staff are like me and they really care for me. Also it’s close, but not too close to home so my parents can come see me play. Also it’s in a great conference. Coach Forrester is a great guy.”
“They are tall like me,” Henry added. “They seem like they will take care of me and will make me a better player.”
Henry averaged 10.3 points and 9 rebounds for Southeast high school last season. As a junior, he earned spots on the Central State Eight Conference first team and the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette Honorable Mention 75 team.
Henry was also pursued by in-state schools Eastern Illinois and Indiana State.
We’re still working to learn more about the other three signees. Simmons is a 6’6 forward from Michigan City Indiana.
Chandler is a JUCO transfer who played his high school ball in texas. Talking to JUCO Hoops blog, Chandler described why he chose SIUE.
“Yeah I felt it was a good decision for me because I just felt like SIU-E was the best spot for me. They spread the offense and I space the floor well. I think I would fit in there program good, and I love their coaching staff too. Coach Gil was cool as well he had a lot to do with me committing there.”
Highlights from Chandler’s days at Grovetown HS are below.
We’re still looking for information on the 6’6 SF Newtown. We’ll post it here once we find it.
