- We normally focus on basketball in the Daily 3, but the big story coming out yesterday is on the gridiron, where there are rumors that Eastern Illinois head coach Dino Babers has not only interviewed at Eastern Michigan, but is the frontrunner. I’m not sold he actually goes there, though. The money would be better, but he’s due a raise at Eastern Illinois, and we’ve seen coaches flirt with other schools to get a bigger boost. While Eastern Michigan is and FBS program, EMU is historically bad. They’ve gone 2-10 three of the last four years. They haven’t had a winning season in more than a decade. Yes, Babers turned over a 2-9 EIU program very quickly, but he also came to a team with a star-quality quarterback in Jimmy Garoppollo and wide receiver in Erik Lora. He’s not getting those at EMU. Of course, with those two leaving, expecting EIU to repeat this season is a lofty goal, and he may see that writing on the wall.
- This week really begins the time of the year where I’m a bit ambivalent about college basketball. The atmosphere of the game is a huge reason why I love it, and it’s not the same once the students head off campus for winter break. As much as I blast teams for not playing home games, if they spend the last part of December on the road, I have no problem with that. Of course, someone has to host the game, which is why there should me more December tournaments. No one attends those anyway…
- Today’s Slate:
Alcorn State at Jacksonville State. At home, this is a game the Gamecocks should win. Key word: Should. The Braves are…they’re not good. 335th in offense, 339th in defense. There are only 351 Division I teams. They do rebound the ball fairly well, but all three of their wins are against non-Division I teams.
Fairfield at Belmont has been postponed, due to weather. It will be rescheduled at a later date, according to the school:
