1. In case you weren’t up, or just not on twitter, myself and a few SEMO fans had a slight disagreement over last night’s win. The Redhawks narrowly beat a 4-10 IUPUI team in overtime at home, the second straight home game that’s been a struggle for the Redhawks. (At least they won this one…) I get that any team can beat any other team, but there’s an issue of consistency here that bothers me. It’s not that one sub .500 team nearly beat SEMO, it’s that SEMO is getting challenged over and over again by teams they shouldn’t be. I’ve said it all year: SEMO has the talent to win the West Division in the OVC. Jarekious Bradley is my early pick for newcomer of the year, Tyler Stone is still one of the better big men, and Lucas Nutt is a fantastic point guard. But they’ve played a weak non-conference schedule, and honestly haven’t been all that impressive. Still, they’re 8-4, with the best record in the West, but Murray State is playing better than they were in November. So is UT Martin. Getting through the division isn’t going to be a cakewalk, and I’m starting to get concerned that once again we’re looking at a SEMO team that doesn’t quite live up to their potential. That being said, as talented as they are, the Redhawks could completely prove me wrong, also. Wouldn’t be the first time.

2. Oh SIUE. I don’t know what to say about this team any more. There are bad defensive performances, and there’s there’s giving up 60 percent shooting to a not very good SIU team. I know that’s a slam on Carbondale, but let’s be honest, Barry Hinson didn’t go on a rant last week to praise his team’s playmaking. The offensive performance was just as bad this time around for the Cougars. This is a team sliding backwards in a bad way, with conference play just on the horizon. The grumblings, which really began last year, really seem to be getting louder about the future of head coach Lennox Forrester, and while I still say some patience is required for a team still early into the Division I transition, the question has to be asked: is this team getting better? Conference play will be a bit more telling, but things aren’t looking great just before Christmas.

3. An early Merry Christmas from the OVC Ball team! It’s been a great year of growth here at the site thanks to all of you. We’re taking the next few days off, but we’ll be back in time for Friday’s action.
