Starting this week, we bring you the Game of the Week, where will have an in depth preview as well as in depth coverage of the game right here on

IPFW has already defeated two OVC teams this season, beating up on EIU a couple of weeks ago and knocking off Tennessee Tech in a close one 69-66.

The Mastodons will try to make it three straight against the Ohio Valley Conference this season when they take on SIUE.

I was one of the few people who believed they could make a run in the west and get to Nashville. Now, with a 2-7 record my hope is not gone, albeit diminishing. A win on the road against an 8-4 team wouldn’t necessarily be a convincing win but would at least restore some hope that SIUE can compete in the OVC West.

Below is our break down and score predictions for this weeks “OVCBALLCast Game of the Week.”

  1. Jonathan Shank:
Warning. Rant ahead. This podcast literally made me want to throw my listening device through a window. I usually stay pretty neutral but have either of you watched an SIUe game all year? Both good and bad things said I disagreed with most of it. Talking about how deep the teams are. This is the deepest the cougars have been since I can remember. It's hard to play a bunch of guys 20 minutes a game when you are playing at least 10 guys a night. One thought the Cougars could contend for the west title which is even more optimistic than any cougar fan and another has them last in his power rankings every week. You do realize TSU hasn't won a game yet, right? EIU has 1 win against a D1 and almost all their loses are beat downs even against not great teams. There is no way you are going to convince me that you should rank SIUe under those 2 no matter what you say. SIUe has been competitive in every game they were expected to be. If you want to knock them for not winning that's fine but they are way more competitive than other years and other teams in this conference. I think you guys do a great job but this one seemed way off base. I understand not many people down there pay attention to us up here but if you guys need info there are plenty of people up here that will gladly fill you in. That said, Catlin I appreciate you seeming to understand things that are going on here better than most down there.
    • Steve Peake:
I will agree that the podcast could have been better. I still stand by what I said however, that SIUE could compete and finish near the top of the west. Like you said SIUe has been right there to win almost eevery game and to me, that division seems wide open. Also, with this being the first game of the week podcast it didn't come out exactly as planned but of course we will look to improve on it in the future.
      • Jonathan Shank:
I didn't have a big problem with the competing for the top of the west thing I just think semo is on their own teir but all the other teams I think you could throw darts at. But who knows what happens when conference play starts if semo struggles.
        • Steve Peake:
Yea, with SEMOs size, they are the favorite but that second spot could go to almost anyone.
  2. Eric Callison:
Since I don't know a whole lot about IPFW, I can't really handicap our chances except using the computers to aid me. You can look those up and decide yourself, though. First off, Davis isn't even starting for SIUe. He isn't even necessarily the first choice off the bench. Ray Lester is a bona fide big man for the level of play in the OVC. Rozell Nunn could possible be the newcomer of the year in the conference. I've watched every one of our games, and if the team can learn to close, look out. All they need is a bit of confidence. They could have easily won all 3 of those games in Portland. (Coulda woulda shoulda--I know). As Jonathan said, I don't believe in "us" competing for the title. But "we" are definitely in the middle 50 percent in the conference. I don't ever come into a road tilt thinking about winning it because, let's face it, the baby cougs totally blow on the road. I think this game will show us what to expect from SIUe on the road in conference and it will show if we should expect them to be in the top half or bottom half of the conference. Edwardsville will be a tough, underrated place to visit in conference. I'm just not sure how many, if any, wins edwardsville will get in the conference. The next 3 games (IPFW, Chicago State, and SIU) are all on the road, but are not on consecutive days like our last road trip. This should give us a great idea as to what to expect. One other thing I feel people are missing about "us" is that this team is much, much deeper. Keaton Jackson will challenge for the league lead in blocks off the bench, and Mo Wiltz hit five threes off the bench against the Chippewa. Kris Davis can't be as bad as he has been and Cam Craig is a competent passer and on-the-ball defender, when needed. We won't get any respect until we prove we deserve it. That's totally fair and to be expected. Just don't be shocked when SIUe is in Nashville at the end of the year, even if it is as the last seed. Glad to see the podcast! Hope they go all season and I look forward to listening to more of them. (I wrote this on my phone from work, so please don't come at me if there are spelling/grammar issues or any incoherent thoughts. Just wanted to get this up in a pinch because I work 38 hours this weekend.)
  3. Alex Helton:
I'm sorry guys but that podcast was absolutely terrible. I applaud your efforts, but Tom have you even watched a SIUe game? Why was Kris Davis the main point? I don't even know where to start. Honestly, your credibility is getting questionable. As a daily reader of OVCball, I must say that this podcast might cause me to boycott the site. OVCball has become a gloried stat sheet website. I can do that guys....I don't need your help.
    • Steve Peake:
Well after SIUe pulls off the upset I hope you will at least comeback for the postmortem story I will post. I will say that Tom is very knowledgeable about all things OVC even if you don't agree with him all the time. This podcast was basically a trial run if enough people don't like it I'll be willing to try something else. You're absoluetely right, you don't need us to read a stat sheet which is why we try to bring you facts stats and Opinions in a unique way. Since I'm new to the site I am open to suggestions.
      • Alex Helton:
I have no problem with you. I do find it crazy that Tom (A football guy for OVCball) Is talking about our team like somehow he knows SIUe. I am not frustrated with saying we will lose...believe me I have been hearing this for 5 years. My frustration falls with the content that OVCball puts out for SIUe and all teams besides Murray, Belmont, SEMO and EKU. It's time to realize that there are tons more teams to cover thoroughly. I hate it everytime I see the same few sentences about SIUe. All that seems to be said, about our team, is that we can't play defense. It's a broken record. The reason why this site is not at its potential is because the bias towards a few teams, coverage that is questionable, and stat dominated articles. Steve you inherited a now make it better.
        • ovcball:
Alex, first off thanks for your comments. I don't disagree with your comments about the content of OVCBall, which is why this year we're making an effort to expand our writing base. Students from Murray State, Belmont, SEMO, and EKU have joined our team in the past year, which is why you've seen more coverage from those schools. We're hoping to, in the future, have team coverage from all 12 OVC schools, but until we do we will attempt to cover every team as well as possible. I have seen SIUE three times this seasons, and said much more about the team than the defense. I've commented on the depth, the ball movement, the reluctance to take open shots when they're not falling, their ever-changing lineups, and much more, honestly. Also, while Tom is our main football writer, I can promise he spends nearly as much time on the basketball court as well. I'm sorry for the errors in the podcast, which is something that I will work to correct in the future with Steve and Tom. Thanks again for your comments, I promise we're taking them to heart.
