This week represents probably the biggest disconnect between myself and other voters, especially where two teams are involved. But there’s little disagreement who should be at the top, as the Bruins continue notching impressive wins.

The Bruins continue to dominate despite injuries hampering their backcourt. Their loss at VCU, being so lopsided in the final score, was disappointing, but Belmont clearly competed most of the way. Tuesday's win at MTSU could help boost the Bruins seed if they're dancing in March

EKU had their change at a signature win at NC State, but ended up being blown out by the Wolfpack. They get their shot at VCU this week, although it will be on the road, not inside friendly confines.

SEMO won the UCD Classic, which is great, although I wasn't among the voters moving the Redhawks up. Why not? They don't have a single win over an RPI-top 200 team. They're winning the games they should be winning, which is good, but I've still yet to see if they're truly ready to take the next step.

Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. Sure, Morehead State can force them as well as well as almost any team in the nation, but it doesn't matter if you turn it over right back. The Eagles lose the ball on over 23% of their possessions, and you're going to struggle to win consistently with those type numbers.

Austin Peay is in that "we don't know if they're sneaky good or just alright" phase right now, although both is a marketed improvement over last season. Their December slate, outside of a trip to Vanderbilt, is very winnable, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Governors are sniffing 10 non-conference wins when it's all said and done.

As we've mentioned all season, Tennessee Tech is improved from last year. As we've also mentioned, I'm still just not certain how much improved. I'll keep sticking them in the middle until I see some consistent performance on the offensive end, or the notch a truly notable win, preferably on the road.

Tonight's game against Western Illinois could be quite telling just how far along the Panthers are. Reggie Smith has shown he can be the consistent scoring leader that the Panthers are looking for, but I'd hold off on calling Eastern Illinois an "offensive threat"

Can someone please explain to me why Murray State, a team that's only game since the last Power Rankings was getting blown out at St. Mary's, moved up on the majority of ballots? Everyone keeps telling me they're not giving up on the Racers because it's Murray, but have you watched this team this year? Their name isn't going to win them any games if they can't start rebounding, defending, and hitting free-throws.

So after praising SIUE's offense, they struggle mightily at home to beat UT-Pan American. But what worries me more is yet another second half slump that almost cost them another win. When shots aren't falling, SIUE needs to get the ball to the rim, and take high-percentage shots (or at worst, draw fouls) to keep momentum from getting out of control.

It was another loss, but the Gamecocks showed some resolve on Saturday against Central Michigan, something that's been questioned through the first month of the year. They're in the middle of an 8-day break before traveling to Florida State on Sunday.

UT Martin stays off the bottom rung of the Power Rankings this week thanks in part to a very generous voter, who, for reasons I will likely never understand, put the Skyhawks 7th. UTM is without a win over a Division I opponent, although tonight they should have a fair chance on the road against former OVC rival Samford.

Yeah, you had to drop to last this week. Playing a brutal schedule is no doubt a contributor to the 0-9 start, but losing to Alabama A&M at home is deeply concerning. It was of TSU's worst performances of the year, as the Tigers needed a second-half rally just to get within range of the Bulldogs.

  1. Jonathan Shank:
people do realize SIUe hasn't played a non D1 team yet to inflate their record like murray, jsu, utm right? 10th is crazy. If you want to put murray ahead of them cause they have played tougher matchups then fine, but JSU shouldn't be. I know teams 5-11 are fairly close but still if they are at 10 then some people are putting them down in the 11 and 12 range. I can be just as down on this team as anyone but even I can't put them that low. Other teams are losing winnable games at home. Even we haven't done that.
    • ovcball:
I think the issue is more that people just haven't seen SIUE play, outside of the area. Which is a shame.
      • Jonathan Shank:
That is probably true. And I take the time to go back and look at everyones schedule before I rank. I am sure not everyone does that either.
    • Jonathan Shank:
okay its not CRAZY but I don't get it with how horrible some of the other teams have been.
