This is baffling.
New UT Martin Athletic Director Julio Freire has scheduled a press conference for 9 a.m. Monday to announce “the future of the men’s basketball program.”
Only, he claims not to know what that is. Head coach Jason James had no comment to television station WPSD, saying he and Freire will discuss the future at the season’s end.
That end is this Saturday, two days before the mysterious press conference to announce “the future.”
There are only three options here, and only two make any sense for a press conference: James is either being fired with one year left to go in his contract, or he’s getting an extension. (I can’t imagine a press conference to say “James will be returning for the final year of his contract.” But this whole ordeal is somewhat confusing.)
Given James’ record, the announcement about the future announcement coming two-days after the Skyhawks were eliminated from OVC Tournament contention, it’s doesn’t scream “good news.”
But that’s just what this announcement does: there already is speculation about James’ future in Martin. It’s now been turned up to 11.
We’ll let you know “the future” on Monday.
