Every May, we have a tradition at OVC Ball to provide the first, and ridiculously early, previews for the upcoming basketball season…that’s still six months out. We launched this in 2011, making this our fourth year. And we’ve had…mixed success.

  • Best Prediction: Tennessee State would jump from 5th to 2nd in the league. (They did just that)
  • Second Best Prediction: Austin Peay wouldn’t contend for the conference title. (Coaches and SID’s picked them to win OVC. They finished seventh.)
  • Worst Prediction: Tennessee Tech would win the OVC. (They finished fourth)

  • Best Prediction: Belmont, not Murray, coming off 31-2, would win the OVC. (They did)
  • Worst Prediction: SIUE was on the rise, and would finish in the top four. (They finished 11th)

  • Best Prediction: Southeast Missouri wouldn’t compete for a title. (They barely made the OVC tournament)
  • Worst Prediction: Morehead State missing the OVC Tournament. (They finished 4th)

To be entirely honest, last season’s predictions were my worst yet. I had Eastern Illinois second in the west, SIUE as the worst team in the league, EKU winning the conference outright (at least everyone got that wrong) and Tennessee State making the OVC Tournament.

This year, it’s time for redemption.

My six-months out Power Rankings for 2014-15.

  1. Bret:
Jeff Johnson leaving is a blessing. No more ugly 3 point shots from a guy who needed to be rebounding.
  2. Alex Helton:
God bless America. Are you sure you cover the OVC?
    • ovcball:
      Fairly certain...
  3. The Racer Hobo™:
I can't argue, you got the Racers at #1, so that's good! Haha
  4. GJF:
Enjoy the analysis, Catlin. However, as a Southeast fan, just surprised you didn't mention Bradley in their preview. He was second team all OVC and newcomer team. Minus the injuries he dealt with mid season on, would've been a contender for POY. Can't argue with the top 4 rankings and really think Houston transfer JJ Thompson will make a big difference at the PG position for the Redhawks. As always, enjoyed the article.
    • ovcball:
That...was a complete oversight on my part.
  5. Nighthawk:
I'm officially changing the name of this site to Murray State least try and hide the fact that you're a homer haha seriously though we did not give 200k to a coach to finish 10th...with Taylor and Oldham coming back combined with the talent he has already signed anything short of finishing out of the top three in our division will not only be disappointing but would shock me honestly
    • ovcball:
I agree that you didn't pay 200k for 10th, but rebuilds take time. UTM has six new players, a new coach...they all need time to gel as a team. I think UTM has a brighter future, I just don't know if Schroyer can turn it around in one season is all.
