Eastern Illinois junior pitcher Matt Borens was taken in the 11th round (pick No. 332) of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Players Draft by the New York Yankees on Saturday afternoon. EIU has now had a player drafted in each of the last six seasons.

Borens becomes the highest drafted player since Brett Nommensen who was taken in the eighth round by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2009.

Borens went 6-4 this season with a 3.39 in 16 appearances (15 starts). The Monee, Ill., native held opposing hitters to a .238 batting average while throwing 100 strikeouts in 109 innings of action.

His 100 strikeouts ranked second in the conference this season behind Tennessee Tech’s David Hess, a fifth round selection by the Baltimore Orioles, who had 104 strikeouts. Borens is only the second player in school history to throw 100 or more strikeouts in a season, joining former MLB All-Star Marty Pattin.
