Kickoff is tomorrow! (Insert shriek of excitement here.) It may be premature to rank the teams before they hit the field, but we did it anyway. Thanks to the fans who submitted their Power Rankings on Twitter. We changed the formula this year to simply have a total ranking by combining writer and fan rankings. The scale runs between 20-100 points. I give to you the OVC Ball preseason Power Rankings.

Jacksonville State

Score (of 100): 97
JSU is coming off the best season in school history, and almost everyone is returning on offense. Austin Faulkner and I believe this to be the best group of Gamecocks we have seen on paper. They will probably lose to the reigning Rose Bowl champions this weekend, but the strongest steel is forged in the hottest fires, right?

Eastern Illinois

Score: 87
Eastern Illinois enters 2014 with Dino Babers, Jimmy Garappolo, Erik Lora, and a great supporting cast of potential OVC superstars. Despite losing three key components to back-to-back conference championship seasons, Eastern Illinois is still poised to be a contender. It is rare the reigning conference champion is a dark horse, but the Panthers are exactly that right now.

3

Eastern-Illinois-Power-Rankings
Tennessee State

Score: 86
The Tigers are arguably the best defensive team in the conference and one of the best in the country. Can they find an offense to match this year?

4

Eastern-Illinois-Power-Rankings
Eastern Kentucky

Score: 69
EKU is the hipster’s pick to win the conference after a sub-par year in 2013. The Colonels have history on their side with 21 OVC championships. We will not learn much about this team until next week when they visit Miami (not South Beach).

5

UT-Martin-Power-Rankings
UT Martin

Score: 57
The last time UTM took the field, their defense gave up seventy points. UT Martin was a team who won the games it should last year, and they showed a lot of promise until late in the season. The Skyhawks get a shot at an upset this weekend at Kentucky. If they can keep the score respectable, this team may be better than some of us thought.

6

Murray State

Score: 50
This is Chris Hatcher’s “bubble year” at Murray State. The Racers have proven they can hang with the big dogs of the conference, but can they finally get over the hump and win consistently? This may be the Hatch Attack’s last chance.

7

Eastern-Illinois-Power-Rankings
Tennessee Tech

Score: 40
Some of our writers think the Golden Eagles belong farther up the list, but the majority of OVC fans are not convinced they have what it takes to cause OVC chaos. They lost every OVC game (other than SEMO and Austin Peay) by at least ten points. Prove me wrong, TTU.

8

Eastern-Illinois-Power-Rankings
Southeast Missouri

Score: 33
SEMO showed some fight last year, but they have to do a better job of stopping the run. Even pass-happy teams like EIU have solid running games. The Redhawks finished 2013 with a near of JSU. That is something to build on, starting this week against Missouri Baptist.

9

Eastern-Illinois-Power-Rankings
Austin Peay

Score: 20
I am not going to mince words: the Governors were awful last year. The schedule for this year does not bode well either. If only one thing stays constant this year, it will be Austin Peay at the bottom.
