Defensive back Stanley Absanon was named the adidas OVC Defensive Player of the Week following his performance in the Eastern Kentucky University football team’s 17-10 win at Miami (Ohio) Saturday afternoon.

Absanon became the first Eastern Kentucky player to notch two interceptions in the same game in almost two years in the victory. The junior from Auburndale, Florida, made a jarring hit in the end zone on a 3rd-and-4 play in the third quarter that prevented the RedHawks from scoring a touchdown. Three minutes later, Absanon picked off his first pass of the day and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 10. He then sealed the game by making an interception at midfield with a minute to play in the game.

Absanon finished the game with six tackles and three pass break-ups to go along with his two interceptions.

The other OVC weekly award winners were Jacksonville State quarterback Eli Jenkins (Offensive), Tennessee Tech kick/punt returner Ladarius Vanlier (Specialist) and Jacksonville State defensive tackle Devaunte Sigler (Newcomer).

Eastern Kentucky (2-0) opens its home schedule this Saturday, Sept. 13 against Morehead State. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
