SIUE’s schedule is…weird. There no tournament, which means just 28 games. There’s only one money game. The home games, minus the two non-Division I opponents, are on average tougher than the road games. It’s…odd.

*I counted the two Portland games as one trip. Let’s be honest, no one is going there for one of the two games.

It’s easy to look at this and go ‘this is terrible,’ but while it lacks big-name opponents, it’s not really all that bad. You host in-state opponent (and hopeful eventual rival) Southern Illinois, there’s a good road game at St. Louis. You bring in a Horizon opponent in Milwaukee, and IPFW was a solid team last year. Let’s be honest — the home slate is not bad, in the least.

The biggest negative it’s short — not having that exempt tournament hurts. But you can make a case that if you have a good SIUE team, there’s a lot of games you should be in for 40 minutes. It’s not sexy, but it may just be good enough to challenge SIUE before conference play.

Road Trip to make

This is a no-brainer — You drive the 30-minutes to St. Louis. If you just love the West Coast, sure, get a plane ticket to Portland. But make the short drive to SLU.

Don’t waste your money…

The non-DI schools of course jump out, but so does Chicago State. Students are gone at that point in December, CSU isn’t a top-tier opponent by any stretch. If you overspend on Christmas gifts, you can watch that one from home.
